For beginners, it is often intimidating to attend your first camp. You may feel that you will be the only one there without teammates and the only one that has no experience. Trust us, at the end of the first day, you realize that this is a great environment to see if volleyball is a match for you.
You will learn all the basics required to play the sport and prepare for a team tryout, this year or in the future. You will meet many others just like yourself since we keep all the beginners together in one group, often 2-3 courts to start out. After the first day, there may be some players that opt to move a bit faster, either because they are very athletic or have had some exposure to the game (siblings, middle school league, camp).
You will be with others of your experience and ability.
Our coaches are able to gear the instruction and intensity level toward the group with which they are working. We tend to be somewhat flexible, but in general, our beginners are age 11 and up. Most are entering 8th or 9th grade. Most campers are female, but boys volleyball is growing and each year we get more beginner boys at camp. Feb Vacation Clinic offers a separate beginner court for boys only. (and there is one for girls too)
The beginner's camp format is structured specifically for your level.
The format for the beginners is different than the rest of the camp. We realize that you need more instruction on basic individual skills and knowledge of the sport before you start specializing in any one position. We will give you some exposure to all aspects of the game, but focus mostly on the basic skills that are needed for the 1st year level of competition.
Beginner Program Levels (Within the "Beginner" Group) There is a range of what Masspike classifies as "Beginner", Level 0. Even though you don't see it on the application, the details you provide on the application, helps up to subcategorize the beginner group. For those with some experience, please realize that you are relatively beginners compared to those with high school experience and try not to get caught up in the names/codes
0Beg - No significant volleyball experience, other than PE class
0+CC- No team experience but have attended some volleyball camps, clinics, or trainings
0+MS/U12 - Experience on a middle school, after school team or league, or U12 JO/Club
There are some players at 0MSU12 that may be placed onto a high school player court but after observing for the last 25 years of camp, we’ve found that most middle school and U12 players do not have sufficient team formation knowledge or position knowledge, and sometimes physical strength to fit well on a court with older players. They also should not be asked to specialize in a position too early. This decision to move a player to more experienced court will be made on a case by case basis. We feel players will stand out on court within the first couple hours or even 15 minutes.
There are Beginner Programs at almost every Masspike Series (Summer, Fall, Feb Vacation!)
